Swiftwater Rescue Responder

Course Description
This course is designed for persons who want to operate in swift water. The course provides the competency to:
  • Perform land-based swiftwater and floodwater rescues and recoveries as a member of a specialist team.
  • Apply self rescue skills in white water with Grade 2 rapids.
This course applies to:
  • Personnel who perform a narrow range of land based rescues from a swiftwater and floodwater environment while applying fundamental operational knowledge and working under direct supervision.
  • Personnal working as assistant rafting, canoeing or kayaking leaders working for outdoor education or adventure providers, volunteer groups, not-for-profit organisations or government agencies in a range of white water conditions.
Licensing/Regulatory Information - No licensing, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this course at the time of publication.

Course Content
This course requires the successful completion of 2 units of competency:
  • PUASAR033 - Perform land based swiftwater and floodwater rescue and recovery.
  • SISOWWR201A - Demonstrate self rescue skills in white water.

Entry Requirements
Students must:
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of enrolment.
  • Have access to a computer with standard Microsoft Office programs.
  • Have an internet connection.
  • Have good language, literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Complete a Pre-course Evaluation conducted by Group 314 to determine suitability for the course.
  • Successful completion of HLTFA311A Apply First Aid.

Swiftwater Rescue Technician

Course Description
This course is designed for persons required to undertake swiftwater and floodwater rescues and recoveries as a member of a specialist team.

It applies to personnel who are skilled operators who apply the full range of rescues within a swiftwater and floodwater environment, using some discretion and judgement and relevant theoretical knowledge. They may provide technical advice and support to a team and may adopt a leadership role during the rescue. A person operating at this level will not be performing under direct supervision.

  • PUASAR034 - Undertake swiftwater and floodwater rescue and recovery.
