Enhance your safety and leadership on the water with Group 314’s Swiftwater Rescue (SIS) course.
This hands-on course equips you with the essential skills and knowledge for self-rescue and conducting effective rescues or recoveries on inland white water rivers with rapids up to Grade 2.
Applicable to personnel who are required to operate on, or near, white water rivers.
The course is conducted as a rafting river trip to maximise swiftwater experience and to ensure a full range of swiftwater hazards are identified.
Course Information
This course requires the successful completion of:
- SISORSC004 Self rescue in white water
- SISORSC005 Rescue others in white water
The course includes:
- Swiftwater hazard identification.
- Aggressive and defensive swimming.
- Wading.
- Re-entering a craft.
- Rescuing others from moving water.
- Using mechanical advantage systems.
The course is conducted in the field on a suitable river that has Grade 2 rapids and a location for the safe practice of skills. The training may require students to camp overnight in an area close to the river.
Where possible, students will undertake a river trip to maximise their experience with swiftwater. A river trip will involve being professionally guided in a white water raft down suitable stretchers of a river.
Statement of Attainment.
Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF).
RPL options are not available for this course. Students must complete all the assessment tasks as a verification of competency.

The assessment tasks that must be completed for this course are:
- Knowledge Assessment (written).
- Skills Assessment.
- Competency Observation (scenarios).
Students will participate in a range of realistic rescue scenarios on a river.
Suitable river locations throughout Australia (e.g. Murrumbidgee, Nymboida, Snowy, Mitta Mitta).
Rivers are seasonal and subject to short notice variations.
Students must:
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of enrolment.
- Have an email address and access to a computer with an internet connection.
- Complete a Pre-course Evaluation to determine suitability for the course.
- Be able to swim at least 50 metres.
- Be physically fit and well to participate in swiftwater rescue training.

The minimum course size is 8 students.
This cost includes:
- Two days of training and assessment.
- A range of practical scenarios on different sections of river.
- Professionally guided raft trips on Grade 2+ rivers.
- All technical swiftwater rescue equipment.
Personal equipment may be used but must be inspected and approved by Group 314 prior to the course commencing.
