Alpine Survival

Alpine Survival and snow camping is one of those unique experiences that everyone should try at least once in their life.

Camping in the snow is often part of a backcountry skiing or snow shoeing activity but can also be conducted as an activity in itself. 

Whether it's lightweight camping as part of an expedition, comfortable camping near a vehicle, or a specialist snow survival program, alpine survival and snow camping is a truly unique experience in a hostile environment. Our training equips you with the specialist techniques and confidence needed to operate in this challenging environment.

About Alpine Survival

Alpine survival and snow camping is a rewarding activity because it helps to develop individual and group qualities such as:

Some of the memorable experiences from alpine survival and snow camping include:

  • Hearing the snow falling on the tent.
  • Experiencing the exhilaration of waking up to fresh snow on the tent.

  • Seeing sunsets and sunsets in the snow.
  • Seeing the magnificent Australian snow gums covered in snow.

Alpine survival and snow camping is restricted to the alpine regions of Australia, the typical areas normally used by Group 314 include:

  • Mount Selwyn, NSW.
  • Kosciuszko Main Range, NSW.
  • Falls Creek, VIC.

Alpine survival and snow camping can only be undertaken in winter - typically July and August have the most reliable snow, although June and September may also present opportunities.

These activities can be affected by storms, blizzards, or a lack of snow.

All equipment technical equipment is provided by Group 314, including:

  • Ski pants, jacket. gloves.
  • Skis or snowshoes (if required).
  • Goggles.
  • Pack.
  • Headlamp.
  • Four season tent.
  • Winter sleeping bag.
  • Sleeping mat.
  • Alpine cooker.
  • Rations.

Participants must provide:

  • Thermals.
  • Warm layer (e.g. fleece pants and jacket).
  • Warm gloves.
  • Beanie / sunhat.
