Backcountry skiing is restricted to the alpine regions of Australia, the typical areas normally used by Group 314 include:
- Mount Selwyn, NSW.
- Kosciuszko Main Range, NSW.
- Falls Creek, VIC.
Backcountry skiing can only be undertaken in winter - typically July and August have the most reliable snow.
Backcountry skiing activities can be affected by storms, blizzards, or a lack of snow.
All equipment technical equipment is provided by Group 314, including:
- Ski pants, jacket. gloves.
- Skis, poles, and goggles.
- Pack.
- Headlamp.
- Four season tent.
- Winter sleeping bag.
- Sleeping mat.
- Alpine cooker.
- Rations.
Participants must provide:
- Thermals.
- Warm layer (e.g. fleece pants and jacket).
- Warm gloves.
- Beanie / sunhat.
