Learn how to perform complex vertical rescues with Group 314’s Complex Vertical Rescue (Outdoor Leadership) course.
This practical program builds your skills in performing complex vertical rescues.
Over the course, you'll develop skills and knowledge in use of various equipment, knot craft, essential theory, mechanical advantage systems and casualty rescue techniques, ensuring you gain the skills needed to handle challenging rescue scenarios with confidence.
The course will use a variety of campsites. Students are to bring their own camping equipment and rations.
Abseiling equipment will be provided (ropes, carabiners, helmet, harness, prusik cords, descenders, and ascenders, etc.)
Students may bring personal equipment, but it must pass an inspection by Group 314 prior to use.
Course Information
This course requires the successful completion of:
- SISORSC003 - Perform complex vertical rescues.
The course content is:
- Day 1 - Demonstration activity, theory, knot craft, techniques, and equipment.
- Day 2 - Mechanical advantage and casualty rescue techniques.
- Day 3 - Assessment.
- Day 4 - Assessment.
- Day 5 - Assessment.
Training is provided using practical sessions whilst performing complex vertical rescue simulated activities.
Statement of Attainment.
Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF).
Students are required to be employed in an Outdoor Leadership role and have prior skills and knowledge in roping, abseiling, and outdoor guiding. They will therefore have experience that qualifies as RPL. RPL will be assessed and supplemented by gap and/or refresher training as required.

This course requires students to complete a variety of assessment activities.
- Written Knowledge Assessment (1).
- Competency Observation (5).
- Skills Assessment(1).
Kapooka (or other suitable abseil sites).
Students must:
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of enrolment.
- Have an email address and access to a computer with an internet connection.
- Complete a Pre-course Evaluation conducted by Group 314 to determine suitability for the course.
- Previous experience in abseiling or climbing on multi-pitch natural surfaces.
- Have the physical ability to perform vertical rescues.
