Take on the challenge of open waters with Group 314’s Sea Kayaking – Open Waters course.
Designed to develop your competency in kayaking along exposed coastal environments, this course offers real-world experience in navigating more challenging open waters.
We'll be camping at a variety of campsites along this exciting and comprehensive sea kayaking journey where you'll develop your practical, planning and navigation skills in exposed coastal waters.
You’ll need to bring your own camping equipment, including clothing, footwear, sleeping bag and mat, tent, cooking equipment, rations, water containers.
All sea kayaking equipment will be provided (kayak, paddle, lifejacket, helmet, cag, wetsuit, throw bag, knife, drybag, first aid equipment, PLB etc.).
Students may bring personal equipment, but it must pass an inspection by Group 314 prior to use.
Course Information
This course requires the successful completion of:
- SISOKYS003 Paddle a sea kayak in exposed coastal waters.
The course content is:
- Day 1 - Demonstration activity, verification of skills.
- Day 2 - Skills development, planning and navigation.
- Day 3-5 - Expedition (1)
- Day 6 - Surf skills
- Day 7 - Skills development, planning and navigation.
- Day 8-10 - Expedition (2)
Training is provided using practical sessions whilst conducting kayaking activities on open waters.
Statement of Attainment.
Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF).
Students are required to be employed in an Outdoor Leadership role and have prior skills and knowledge in sea kayaking and outdoor guiding. They will therefore have experience that qualifies as RPL. RPL will be assessed and supplemented by gap and/or refresher training as required.

Jervis Bay
Students must:
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of enrolment.
- Have an email address and access to a computer with an internet connection.
- Complete a Pre-course Evaluation conducted by Group 314 to determine suitability for the course.
- Be able to swim and be physically fit to undertake sea kayaking.
