SIS50421 Diploma of Outdoor Leadership

Course Description
This qualification reflects the role of highly skilled senior leaders or program, logistics and operations managers.

Senior leaders lead and supervise dependent participants in recreational activities and have a role in planning these activities. They are highly proficient in activity techniques and have well-developed leadership skills to manage group participation, cohesion, operational logistics, risk and significant problems as they arise.

Managers are involved in recreational program planning, implementation and evaluation, facility and equipment management, the leadership of personnel, and the operational management of a department or a small business.

All work with significant autonomy, using initiative and judgement to analyse and solve complex problems, and to design systematic approaches to operational practices.

This qualification provides a pathway to work for any type of organisation that delivers outdoor recreation activities including commercial, not-for-profit and government organisations.

Licensing/Regulatory Information - No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Course Content
This course requires the successful completion of 28 units of competency ( Units ).

The 28 Units must be made up of 13 Core Units plus 15 Elective Units.

Core Units
The following units will be Credit Transfer from Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership.

  • PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment.

  • SISOPLN002 Plan outdoor activity sessions.

  • SISOPLN004 Identify hazards, assess and control risks for outdoor recreation activities.

  • SISOPLN005 Interpret weather and environmental conditions for outdoor recreation activities.

  • SISXCAI006 Facilitate groups.


The following Units need to be completed.

  • HLTWHS004 Manage work health and safety.

  • SISOPLN003 Develop outdoor recreation programs.

  • SISOPLN006 Plan for minimal environmental impact.

  • SISOPLN007 Manage risk for outdoor programs.

  • SISXCCS002 Coordinate client service activities.

  • SISXEMR002 Coordinate emergency responses.

  • SISXIND005 Coordinate work teams or groups.

  • SISXIND008 Manage legal compliance.


Elective Units

At least 2 of the following elective groups must be completed. These units must have been previously gained for Credit Transfer.

  • Group A - Abseiling, Natural Surfaces, Multi Pitch.

  • Group D - Canyoning, Easy to Intermediate.

  • Group E - Canyoning, Intermediate to Advanced.

  • Group G - Challenge Course, High elements.

  • Group H - Climbing, Natural Surfaces, Top Rope.

  • Group I - Climbing, Natural Surfaces, Lead, Single Pitch.

  • Group J - Climbing, Natural Surfaces, Lead, Multi Pitch.

  • Group T - Kayaking, Moving Water.

  • Group U - Kayaking, White Water, Grade 2 Rivers.

  • Group W - Sea Kayaking.

  • Group X - Sea Kayaking, Exposed Waters.

  • Group Y - Rafting, Grade 3 Rivers.

  • Group Z - Rafting, Grade 4 Rivers.

  • Group AC - Ski Touring.


Other Elective Units

The remaining elective units can be selected from any of the other groups, or from elsewhere in the SIS Training Package, or from any other current training package or accredited course.

In all cases, the selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the complexity of skills appropriate to the AQF level of this qualification.

Nationally Recognised Training ( NRT ) under the Australian Quality Training Framework ( AQTF ).

Course Fee
The standard fee is $2,500 ex GST for this course (where Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership is a pre-requisite).

Course fees may vary depending on the amount of RPL or Credit Transfer available. Please contact Group 314 to discuss your individual circumstances to develop a custom training plan.

Entry Requirements
Students must:

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of enrolment.

  • Have an email address and access to a computer with an internet connection.

  • Have good language, literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Complete a Pre-course Evaluation conducted by Group 314 to determine suitability for the course.

  • Have prior outdoor recreation industry experience or formal qualifications.



Duration
The course is conducted over a period of 12 months.

Because Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership is a pre-requisite, many units are awarded as Credit Transfer. The course is planned to take 195 hours.

Some students may be able to complete the course in less time through demonstrated prior learning.

Training Strategy
The entire course is conducted as an E-Learning package using an online training system where students complete a variety of activities, questions and projects.

Successful RPL applications may result in variations to the duration and cost of the course.
