Customised Training for the installation and monitoring of bird boxes.
This course develops competency to climb trees and work safely at height. It is a customised course developed specifically for workers in national parks who are installing and monitoring bird boxes.
This course covers techniques such as tree assessments, risk management, building anchors, installing ropes, ascending, descending, using tools, and rescue.
The course has been contextualized for the climbing of trees in national parks; it is not for arborists. It does not include the use of spikes for climbing, nor does it cover the use of chain saws or trimming of trees.
Equipment used in this course includes ropes, carabiners, helmets, harnesses, anchors, ascenders, friction devices, lanyards and pulleys.
Course Information
This course requires the successful completion of 1 unit of competency ( Unit ).
- RIIWHS204E Work safely at heights.
The course content is:
- Theory of climbing trees.
- Tree assessment / risk management.
- Equipment inspection, use, and maintenance.
- Anchors and installing ropes.
- Ascending and descending.
- Using tools at height.
- Rescue.
Training is provided using practical sessions in a field environment.
Statement of Attainment
Nationally Recognised Training ( NRT ) under the Australian Quality Training Framework ( AQTF ).
This course requires students to complete a variety of assessment activities.
Assessment activities include:
- Written Knowledge Assessment (1).
- Competency Observation (2).
- Skills checklist (1).
Refresher training and assessment is conducted on the last two days of the course.
RPL is used for personnel undertaking a refresher course or undertaking a verification of competency. Where RPL is used, students must still complete all the standard assessment activities.

The course is customised such that a verification of competency through the RPL process is required.

The course is practical and conducted in a field location with suitable trees for climbing.
Students must:
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of enrolment.
- Have an email address and access to a computer with an internet connection.
- Complete a Pre-course Evaluation to determine suitability for the course.
- Be able to work at heights.
- Be physically fit and well to climb trees.
